In 6th through 8th grade, your child will learn ...

Read independently for a sustained period of time. • Read and understand different types of books and stories, including novels, nonfiction, plays, and poetry. • Write reports and other documents using correct grammar and punctuation. • Conduct research on assigned topics. • Make effective oral presentations. • Use graphic organizers and other note-taking strategies. • Organize school papers and assignments; keep records of assignments. • Study for tests. • Understand the rules of the English language and apply them in writing. • Use integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and other types of numeric expressions in mathematics. • Use measurements to solve mathematics problems that are related to real-world situations. • Understand basic algebraic and geometric concepts. • Do mathematics problems involving two- and three-dimensional shapes. • Understand the basics of physical and biological science. • Conduct scientific experiments in class. • Solve scientific problems using scientific processes. • Study the history of Florida, the nation, and the world, including major ethnic/cultural groups. • Understand the structure of the U.S. government and the principles of American democracy. • Understand the role of the citizen in American democracy. • Develop basic knowledge of economic systems. • Use maps and write reports about the geography of the world. • Use a computer to write a report, create a graph, and make a chart.



 
Arrival/Dismissal
Students in sixth through eighth grade report to the Middle Learning Center (MLC) cafeteria where they will be supervised and escorted to class by security (5005 NW 112th Ave, Miami, FL 33178).
 
For the safety of all students, parents are not allowed in the building during arrival.  Parents are asked to drop off their children in the designated “PARENT DROP-OFF/PICK-UP” area.  Please drive all the way down so as to accommodate the maximum number of vehicles.  Parking and/or leaving cars unattended is not permitted in this area. Unfortunately, parking is very limited.

Children are expected to be seated in their homeroom classes by 8:35 a.m. for the opening exercises.  Any student arriving after this time is tardy and must report to the office for a pass!
After 8:35 a.m., other than the front entrance, all doors and gates will remain locked for security purposes and the safety of the children.

Students in sixth through eighth grade must be picked up from the Middle Learning Center (MLC) circular driveway in front of the school in the “PARENT DROP-OFF/PICK-UP” area (5005 NW 112th Ave, Miami, FL 33178) unless they are taking the shuttle bus back to the main campus.

Students in sixth through eighth grade who are not picked up on time, will be taken to the MLC office and parents must go into the office and sign their child out.

SHUTTLE FROM MLC
A shuttle will be provided for students in the MLC to be transported to the main campus for after-school activities and/or if they have a sibling attending at the main campus.  Only students with activities and/or siblings in the main campus will be allowed to board the shuttle.

RAINY DAYS
It is most important that all children understand the plan for rainy days.  These plans must be made in advance with your child so that he/she understands exactly what to do in the event of inclement weather.  Children will not be allowed to call home to make any rainy day arrangements.

In the event of severe weather conditions, all students who are picked up by parents, walk or ride their bicycles/skateboards home, will remain in their classrooms until weather conditions improve or a parent arrives to the child’s classroom to pick-up their child

Did you Know...?
  • Breakfast is served FREE to all students each school day from 7:30-8:15am.
  • Healthy eating options such as fresh fruit, whole wheat bread, salads and vegetables are served daily in the school cafeteria
  • The PLC cafeteria is now open for breakfast for PK-K only. Parents are only allowed to eat breakfast in the main cafeteria NOT the PLC cafeteria.
  • The cost of lunch is $2.25 a day Reduced lunch is $0.40 a day. We encourage parents to pre-pay for lunch at www.paypams.com
  • Students need to memorize or bring their student ID number with them at lunch in order to pay. All students need to know how to punch in their lunch numbers.
  • New USDA guidelines now require a fruit or vegetable be served as part of each student's lunch. Milk is optional and is not a required meal component.
  • The school cafeteria sells lunch for adults and non-students at the low price of $3.00 and breakfast for only $2.00.
